Faculte de Philosophie Universite Laval (Quebec) Dans un ouvrage paru en 2001, le chercheur Gilles Kraemer conclut que la presse francophone mediterraneenne (Maroc, Algerie, Tunisie, Val d’Aoste, Egypte et Liban) joue un role politique, economique, social et culturel au niveau national qui n’est pas assume par la presse de langue nationale (l’arabe ou l’italien), de meme qu’elle est un des principaux acteurs du developpement d’une conscience mediterraneenne favorisant la paix et la cooperation. Le bât blesse cependant lorsqu’il est question du role de cette presse quant a l’emergence d’une francophonie dont l’objectif serait de contrebalancer le nouvel equilibre mondial1. Suivant Kraemer, le renforcement de la francophonie mediterraneenne passe par des exemples comme celui du quotidien libanais L’Orient-Le Jour dont la couverture du Sommet de la Francophonie de Hanoi en 1997 aurait ete « la plus variee et la plus exhaustive »2. Etrange hasard puisqu’au meme moment, le Liban obtenait le mandat d’organiser le Sommet de la Francophonie de 2001 qui, pour des raisons justement relatives a l’ordre mondial, a ete reporte en octobre 2002. Pourquoi L’Orient-Le Jour fait-il une si bonne presse a la Francophonie ? Contrairement a la presse algerienne qui a maintes fois insiste sur le caractere neocolonialiste de la Francophonie, la presse libanaise francophone semble y voir une possibilite d’emancipation.
