Introduction : L'éducation thérapeutique du patient (ETP) tend à reconnaître le savoir et les compétences des personnes malades. Les apports de l'intervention de patient dit expert (PE) sont démontrés. Objectif : L'objectif de l'étude est d'explorer les perceptions et ressentis des patients bénéficiant de l'intervention de PE comme éducateurs dans les programmes d'ETP. Méthodes : Une enquête nationale est réalisée par questionnaire auto-administré auprès de personnes atteintes de polyarthrite rhumatoïde (PR), recrutées dans 15 services proposant un programme d'ETP avec la participation de PE. Résultats : Les 62 participants de l'étude estiment s'exprimer plus aisément en présence d'un PE lors des séances d'ETP. La relation de soins est améliorée pour 85,5 % d'entre eux. Le partage de l'expérience vécue et la transmission des savoirs de la vie quotidienne sont les principales attentes des patients vis-à-vis du PE. Le savoir-expérientiel du PE permet le développement de compétences psychosociales tandis que l'expertise clinique des soignants est associée à l'acquisition de compétences d'auto-soins. La co-animation soignant–PE est également plébiscitée par 90,3 % des patients. Discussion : La présence du PE ainsi plébiscitée par les patients bénéficiaires est une marche supplémentaire vers sa reconnaissance institutionnelle à l'instar du Montreal model. Conclusion : L'intervention de PE est jugée utile, les savoirs du PE semblent influencer le changement de comportement des patients bénéficiaires. Le partenariat PE–soignant apparaît également comme une collaboration performante pour améliorer la qualité de vie des malades chroniques.
