Abstract
Confronté à une abondance de ressources bibliographiques et face à des situations cliniques variées, le praticien est invité de nos jours à pratiquer un exercice fondé sur la "preuve" ou la documentation. Cette démarche, initiée au Canada dans les années 80, connaît un essor exponentiel et s'applique pleinement à l'Orthodontie et tout particulièrement à l'évaluation des traitements précoces. Cette pratique consiste en un recours consciencieux, explicite et judicieux à la meilleure preuve scientifique contemporaine lors d'une prise de décision thérapeutique concernant un patient donné. Les quatre étapes successives de cette démarche seront initialement développées. Puis un guide méthodologique, permettant de hiérarchiser les différents travaux de recherche selon la preuve scientifique apportée, sera introduit. Ainsi, de tous les protocoles de recherche disponibles, les essais cliniques randomisés constituent l'outil de référence permettant de juger de l'efficacité des thérapeutiques. Leur utilisation sera enfin envisagée dans le domaine des traitements orthodontiques précoces.
