THE EFFECT OF APPLICATION OF FUNCTIONAL BANDAGE IN THE PREVENTION OF SEROMA FORMATION IN MASTECTOMIZED WOMEN: RANDOMIZED CLINICAL TRIAL

Abstract
The surgical procedure is one of the most applied techniques in the treatment of breast cancer, but among its complications there is the risk of the appearance of seroma, which can negatively influence the healing process. Compression over the seroma region seems to be an effective measure to reduce dead space and facilitate the drainage of accumulated lymph. However, the effect of compression performed by functional bandages on the breast of mastectomized women, in an early manner in order to prevent seroma, is still unclear. Objective: to investigate the preventive effectiveness on seroma by the use of functional bandages in the immediate postoperative period of mastectomy in women, compared with a group of guidelines. Methods: Fifty women will participate in the study, randomized into two groups: guidance group (G 1 - current therapy) and intervention group (use of functional bandage - G2). Patients will be evaluated in four moments, the first one in the clinic during the medical consultation, followed by the post-surgical moment in the ward of the specialized Hospital, and the other two moments during the medical returns in a period of up to 90 days. Seroma evaluation will be performed through palpation and edema inspection 7 days after hospital discharge, when returning for medical consultation, at this moment the drain debit reported by the doctor will be recorded. In the pre- and post-surgical moments, the following questionnaires will be applied: International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS), Shoulder Functionality Questionnaire (QuickDash), the history of the disease, clinical treatment and the ECOG and Karnofsky tests to assess functional capacity. For data normality analysis, Shapiro Wilk's test will be applied. For paired analysis, Student's T test will be performed in case of normal distribution or Wilcoxon test for variables that do not follow Gaussian distribution.
