Introduction : Dans le cadre des travaux de recherche de l’Unité de recherche en pratique pharmaceutique (URPP), nous nous sommes intéressés à la description du rôle et des retombées du pharmacien dans le domaine de la santé. Méthode : Ce premier article propose une mise en contexte du projet IMPACT PHARMACIE qui a permis la mise en ligne d’un site Internet regroupant les meilleures données descriptives du rôle et des retombées du pharmacien. Résultats : Cette mise en contexte comporte un bref rappel historique de l’évolution de la profession de pharmacien, une réflexion sur la nécessité de faire des choix, une recension des principales enquêtes nationales sur l’exercice de la pharmacie hospitalière, une description de l’évolution de la recherche en pratique pharmaceutique et une brève présentation du projet IMPACT PHARMACIE. Conclusion : Compte tenu des ressources disponibles, des choix s’imposent en pharmacie afin de faire un bon usage de l’expertise et de la ressource pharmaceutique. Si plusieurs enquêtes mettent en évidence la nature des soins et des services pharmaceutiques offerts dans le monde, aux États-Unis et plus particulièrement au Canada, il apparaît nécessaire d’encourager la recherche sur les pratiques pharmaceutiques. Le projet IMPACT PHARMACIE vise à répondre à ces enjeux afin de mettre en valeur les meilleures données décrivant le rôle et les retombées du pharmacien.
