Abstract
Diese Masterarbeit setzt sich mit der Darstellung von Millennials (geboren zwischen 1980 und 2000) in der gegenwärtigen englischsprachigen Literatur auseinander und kommt zum Schluss, dass eine neue Kategorie notwendig ist, um diese spezifische Form der Literatur zu beschreiben: hierzu wird der Begriff der „urban millennial novel“ eingeführt. In der Analyse wird der Fokus auf die Übergangsphase zwischen Adoleszenz und Erwachsenenalter gelegt, welche durch den Psychologen J. J. Arnett mit dem Begriff „emerging adulthood“ benannt wird. Diese Entwicklungsphase wird durch Instabilität dominiert, die sich in unterschiedlichen Aspekten manifestiert: unterschiedliche Formen von (romantischen) Beziehungen, wechselhafte Wohnsituationen und ein allgemeiner Fokus auf das Selbst. Drei kontemporäre Romane stehen im Zentrum dieser Arbeit: The Bricks that Built the Houses von Kate Tempest, Why We Came to the City von Kristopher Jansma und Holding Still for as Long as Possible von Zoe Whittall. Alle spielen in großen Städten (London, New York und Toronto) und haben eine Freundschaftsgruppe junger Millennials als Protagonisten. Die geographische Situierung der Romane ist essenziell, da die Beziehung der Charaktere zu der Stadt, in der sie leben, oft ihre Situation spiegelt. Sie sind voller Optimismus und blicken hoffnungsvoll in ihre eigene Zukunft, obwohl die Hürden, die sie zur Erreichung Ihrer Ziele überwinden müssen, sie gleichzeitig überfordern.
