Holotype male; USA, Alaska, Juneau, Thunder Mountain; 6.x.2012; 58.3846, -134.5221; leg. J. Hudson; dep. UAM. Etymology. The new species is named after Kim Frangos, who has made a tremendous contribution to collecting type specimens of Chironomidae for this study. Diagnosis. The adult male of C. kimfrangosi can be distinguished from other species of Chaetocladius by the combination of the following characteristics: large species; temporal setae around 12; last antennal flagellomere with 6 sensilla chaetica; AR 1.6; third palpomere with 9 sensilla clavata clustered together; dorsocentrals 9; squama of the wing with 14 setae, costa not-well extended beyond R 4+5; wing microtrichia visible at 40 ×; anal point long, narrow, parallel sided for most of its length, apex rounded; virga consist of two very long spines, reaching the base of tergite IX; sternapodeme arched; inferior volsella prominent, almost squared, covered in simple setae, located at anterior half of gonocoxite; gonostylus long, narrow and curved, expanded apically, crista dorsalis receded with slight expansion at the apex. Description. Male (n = 1) Total length 4.9 mm; wing 3.6 mm long and 0.9 mm wide. Coloration of mounted specimen. Head, thorax, halteres, and legs light brown. Wings greyish brown. Head. Eyes bare, with short wedge-shaped dorsomedial extension. Tentorium 190 μm long (Fig. 3A). Coronal setae 4. Temporal setae around 12, including 2 outer and 10 uniserial orbital. Antenna with 13 flagellomeres, plume well-developed, last flagellomere with around 6 sensilla chaetica, each of segments 2 and 3 with 2 sensilla chaetica, AR 1.6. Clypeus rectangular, bearing 8 setae, clypeus 105 μm long and 130 μm wide (maximum), clypeus setae 63–92, 77 μm long. Palpal segments lengths (in μm): 64, 47, 163, 125, 248; third palpomere with 9 sensilla clavata clustered together. Thorax. Acrostichals 16 starting close to antepronotum, dorsoventral 9 in a single row, premolars 4, scutellars 6, antepronotal lobes with 5 setae laterally. Humeral pit developed. Wing (Fig. 3D). Anal lobe squared. Squama with 14 setae. Brachiolum with 1 seta, R with 16 setae, other veins bare. Costa extension 53 μm long. Microtrichia visible at 40 ×. Legs. Fore tibial spur 88 μm long, mid tibial spurs 35, 32 μm long, hind tibial spurs 70, 33 μm long, hind leg comb with around 18 spines. Hind tibia spur as in Fig. 3G. Pseudospurs present on mid and hind tarsal segments 1–3. Pulvilli small. Mid and hind trochanter with keel. Lengths and proportions of legs as in Table 2. Hypopygium (Fig. 3J). Tergite IX with around 14 simple setae close to the anal point. Anal point long, narrow, parallel-sided for most of its length, apex rounded, anal point 91 μm long and 43 μm wide (Fig. 3J & M). Virga consists of two very long spines, reaching the base of tergite IX, 96 μm long; apparent small hyaline lamellas adjacent to virga. Sternapodeme arched, 145 μm long. Phallapodeme 86 μm long. Inferior volsella prominent, almost squared, covered in simple setae, located at anterior half of gonocoxite. Gonocoxite 284 μm long. Gonostylus long, narrow and curved, expanded apically, crista dorsalis receded with slight expansion at the apex, gonostylus 120 μm long, mega setae12 μm long. HR 2.4, HV 4.1.
