Abstract
The post-excavation assessment included radiocarbon dating from two boreholes, and pollen and ostracod assessment from an additional borehole. The boreholes were sunk during the previous evaluation stage. The results of the borehole evaluation showed that the site is underlain by the (Thames floodplain) Shepperton Gravel Formation between -2 and -1m OD, overlain by an average 2.3m of Holocene alluvium, reaching 5.3m thick in places. In order to explore the geoarchaeological potential of the site, a further palaeoenvironmental assessment (this report) of the sediments retrieved in selected boreholes was undertaken. The palaeoenvironmental assessment suggested that disturbance of the Holocene alluvial deposits associated with the construction of the docks in the 19th century extended further than initially modelled in the evaluation report. Two radiocarbon dates were produced, recording a Roman to early medieval date in BH01 and an Iron Age date in BH03, but these dates were found to be anomalous as the deposit in BH03 was dated as earlier but found to be around 1m higher than the deposit in BH01. Secondly, the pollen and ostracod data suggested the domination of freshwater conditions which is inconsistent with the wider modelling of the landscape and previous work in the Canada Water area which demonstrates the onset of brackish, estuarine conditions in the Bronze Age. Finally, the ostracod assessment identified artefactual material such as charcoal and industrial waste indicating anthropogenic influence.
