Abstract
The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance and viability of a "new" structural system under various loading conditions.The proposed structural system is posttensioned brick diaphragm walls (already proven to be a very robust system) using CFRP tendons in place of steel ones.The use of CFRP tendons should eliminate the corrosion issues typically associated with prestressed structures.In order to use CFRP tendons for post-tensioning, a stainless steel anchorage system, which allows the full strength of the tendons to be developed with minimal losses at transfer, was designed [Sayed-Ahmed and Shrive 1997, 1998 (US Patent #6082063)].The flexural behaviour of the walls was investigated, including shear in flexure, stiffness, and deflections.The behaviour under racking shear loads and the performance of walls with different bond patterns was also explored.In addition to the tests on structural behaviour, a thermal test was carried out to evaluate the robustness and to confirm theoretical predictions with respect to prestress changes likely to occur due to temperature extremes in the Canadian climate.Construction issues such as the assembly of the anchorage, and the actual post-tensioning procedure were other items of interest.The results of the testing on diaphragm walls raised some issues about the shear strength of prestressed masonry and also the effect on strength of the web-flange connection.Further investigations into these issues allowed an estimate of the increase in shear strength due to prestressing to be made and also revealed how misunderstood the subject of shear in masonry, especially prestressed masonry, is.A new GFRP tie was evaluated.The wall tests and subsequent studies led to the development of a design procedure, which is still undergoing refinement but has been implemented in the preliminary design of a demonstration CFRP post-tensioned diaphragm wall to be constructed on the University campus in the next year.
