Abstract
The CORE 3Ps scallop stocks (Icelandic scallop Chlamys islandica and Giant scallop Placopecten magellanicus) and Sea cucumber (Cucumaria frondosa) stock were assessed in August 2017 in French-Canadian waters southwest of the Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago on the one hand, and in the southern part of the French EEZ known as “Corridor” on the other. For this purpose, a scientific survey, based on a stratified random sampling plan in the CORE area and systematic sampling plan in the French Corridor was conducted onboard S/V Antéa, research vessel of the French Oceanographic Fleet. Although difficult weather conditions affected the survey, 80 sampling points were completed. The analysis of these data shows a slight decrease in the exploitable biomass of Icelandic scallops compared to the last French assessment in 2011, particularly in the Canadian part. On the other hand, the Giant scallop stock shows a slight increase. The distribution of these two species is quite disparate: most of Icelandic scallop stock is located in Canadian area, while almost all of the Giant scallop stock is located in French waters. These two species of scallops are also sparsely present in the French Corridor, with the exception of a single point with high densities of Placopecten. An exploitable biomass of sea cucumber Cucumaria frondosa is confirmed, both in the CORE area, especially in the French part, and in the Corridor. The total lack of knowledge of the dynamics of this stock should however encourage to consider a moderate exploitation of this species.
