Abstract
Bij archeologisch onderzoek in Valkenburg (ZH) zijn Romeinse greppels ontdekt die mogelijk deel uitmaken van een grootschalige veldindeling, uniek langs de Nederlandse limes. Deze vondst, hoewel archeologisch van beperkt belang, heeft een significante historische waarde. De greppels, daterend uit de Romeinse tijd, lagen opvallend haaks op elkaar, wat wijst op geavanceerde landmeetkunde, vergelijkbaar met de precisie gevonden in het landschap van Cotignola, Italië, waar Romeinse centuria nog steeds zichtbaar zijn. Interessant is de mogelijke relatie van deze Romeinse greppels met de middeleeuwse ontginning in het gebied. De greppels lijken nauwkeurig uitgelijnd met middeleeuwse wateringen, wat suggereert dat de middeleeuwse verkaveling mogelijk voortbouwde op Romeinse veldgrenzen. Dit roept vragen op over de zichtbaarheid en herkenbaarheid van deze Romeinse structuren in de middeleeuwen, gezien de natuurlijke veranderingen in het landschap over de eeuwen heen. De hypothese dat de middeleeuwse ontginning direct voortbouwt op Romeinse veldindeling is intrigerend, maar bewijsvoering hiervoor is complex en niet zonder risico's. De AWN-Rijnstreek hoopt verder onderzoek te kunnen doen naar deze greppels bij toekomstige archeologische opgravingen, afhankelijk van beschikbare financiering. Dit onderzoek zou licht kunnen werpen op de interactie tussen Romeinse en middeleeuwse landgebruikspatronen en de continuïteit van landschapskenmerken door de eeuwen heen.
