Abstract
In response to a planning condition on the redevelopment of land at Acre Croft, High Street, Great Chesterford, Essex, CB10 1PL, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Brian Christian acting of behalf of Mr and Mrs R Clarke to undertake a programme of archaeological investigation. Planning permission for the development (14/01437/FUL) was granted by Uttlesford District Council (UDC), subject to a standard archaeological condition issued under the provisions set out in the Department of Communities and Local Government's National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). A full specification for the work carried out is contained in the Heritage Network's approved Project Design dated December 2015.The proposed development entails the construction of three dwellings, with associated garages, parking, services, and landscaping. The present investigation involved a series of seven trial trenches focused on the footprints of the proposed development. The trenches, measuring various lengths of between 4 to 25m, representing approximately 4% of the c.3660 square metre development area, demonstrated good solid geology across the site with very little evidence of any disturbance. A single feature was encountered and located within Trench 7. The potential linear [701] demonstrated feathered edges and a clean sterile fill, suggesting a possible natural feature. No other archaeological features, deposits or finds were encountered during the course of the investigation. No information was gained that would be considered to contribute to the research aims for the evaluation as defined in the approved Project Design. On this basis, the risk that the proposed development might disturb archaeological remains of any significance may be considered to be Low for all periods.
