Abstract
Building recording was carried out between the 18th May and 6th April 2017 and included the following elements. Establishing an accurate archaeological record of the buildings to Historic England Level 2. An overall photographic survey of the exterior and interior of the buildings in their present condition comprising general and detailed shots. Photography was carried out using a Nikon D7200 DSLR equipped with Sigma 35-17mm and Nikon 18-70mm lenses. Files are in RAW with high quality JPEG duplicates. Photography during the archaeological observation was carried out using a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. Where possible and appropriate 1m scales or smaller were included in all photographs. Written notes on the buildings' construction, present and former use and, where appropriate, the buildings' past and present relationship to their setting in the wider landscape. Production of sketch plans in the absence of architectural or survey drawings. The cottages were purpose-built to provide accommodation for agricultural workers at nearby Brampton Lodge. In common with contemporary farmhouses of the region, the cottages were constructed of paleyellow gault brick, and were of a fairly good quality of construction with attention to architectural aesthetic, and providing adequate living space to tenants. They had been refenestrated with doubleglazed windows and modernised internally in order to keep them up to date with living standards. The construction of single-storey extensions at the north of the cottages provided larger bathrooms and allowed the installation of modern water heaters. The cottages were semi-detached, two-storey houses, constructed as a unified pair and sharing a gabled roof. The pair were fully symmetrical with an identical mirrored internal layout. Isolated farmsteads were a typical characteristic of the late18th to mid-19th century regional rural landscape. The cottages were located at a crossroad and at the time of their construction were ideally situated for their purpose. The present road improvement scheme widens the existing road and passes through the area occupied by the cottages, requiring their demolition. This document serves as a record of these buildings prior to their demolition.
