Community-based social supports for 2S/LGBTQ+ older adults in Canada: A scoping review

Abstract
Community-based social supports play a critical role in promoting aging in place, social inclusion, and wellbeing among older adults. Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (2S/LGBTQ+) older adults, who face distinct challenges such as social isolation, historical discrimination, and service inaccessibility, remain underrepresented in gerontological and public health research. While interest in social prescribing and non-clinical supports is growing in Canada, evidence on whether these initiatives are inclusive and responsive to the needs of 2S/LGBTQ+ older adults remains limited. In response, we are conducting a scoping review that aims to map the types and defining features of community-based social supports for 2S/LGBTQ+ older adults in Canada, identify access-related facilitators and barriers, and highlight gaps in the existing evidence base. The review will consider sources that explore formal and informal supports for 2S/LGBTQ+ adults aged 60 years and older (or group mean age of 60 years and older provided all participants are 45 and older) living in Canadian home and community settings. Studies based in acute or long-term care settings will be excluded unless they also address supports in less institutionalized environments such as supportive housing. This review will follow the JBI methodology and be reported in accordance with the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). A comprehensive search will be conducted across MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, and Canadian Business and Current Affairs. Grey literature sources will include Google, Google Scholar, the National Resource Centre on 2SLGBTQI Aging, and the SIREN Evidence and Resource Library. Two independent reviewers will screen and extract data, with findings presented in tables and narrative form aligned with the review objectives.
