Abstract
This scoping review is part of the Connecting Our Way (CoW) project. Cow is a First-Nations Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander led program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children aged 5 to 12. Inspired by an earlier Connecting to Culture (CCP) program, CoW aims to build confidence in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, teach emotional regulation and mindfulness through connection to culture, as well as building a positive connection with identity and cultural spirit. While the CCP was designed for use in Wadjuk Noongar Country, this project will use the research method of Yarning methodology with local key stakeholders, staff, and parents/caregivers to co-design CoW to meet two partner communities' cultural needs. CoW intends to create a culturally infused sense of belonging and increase children's attachment to a community that supports healing against past trauma. Consistent literature from a global viewpoint outlines that cultural identity has been recognised as important in promoting social and emotional well-being, positive health outcomes, and educational and economic success for Indigenous Australians (Roth, 2011). Moreover, evidence indicates that the well-being of Indigenous individuals is profoundly influenced by family, kinship, community, and their connection to Country, culture, spirituality, and ancestry (Dudgeon et al., 2020). Therefore, comprehending how many initiatives incorporate these aspects as a part of their core and what the impact and underlying assumptions of initiatives designed for Indigenous children and their cultural identity it is relevant to stop perpetuating a biomedical approach and expose how the hegemony of colonial discourses persists. Our scoping reviwe aim to know how are the key characteristics of initiatives developed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander/First Nation/Indigenous children aged 5 to 12; focused on strengthening cultural well-being, relationships, and connections described in the literature? The scoping review will research initiatives that work with Indigenous children 5 to 12 across CANZUS nations (Canada, Australia, Aotearoa, New Zealand and The United States of America). All the countries researched endure a legacy of European Colonisation. It is relevant to mention that a preliminary search of JBI Evidence Synthesis was conducted, and no current or ongoing systematic reviews or scoping reviews on the topic were identified.
