Exploring Womxn's Experiences Obtaining an Abortion After the Gestational Age Limit in the Maritimes : A Multi-Methods Qualitative Study

Abstract
The availability of abortion services in Canada is dependent on a multitude of factors, including gestational age. Although there are no legal restrictions on when in a pregnancy an abortion can occur, women, transmen, gender non-binary folks and Two-Spirit people (womxn) are only able to obtain abortion services up to 24 weeks' gestation. Those seeking a later gestational age (LGA) abortion must obtain services outside of the country. For those living in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, or Prince Edward Island (the Maritimes), the availability of abortion services is limited to 15 weeks' 6 days. This multi-methods study aimed to understand what is currently known about LGA abortion in Canada and examine womxn's experiences seeking and obtaining an LGA abortion in the Maritimes. We also interviewed abortion providers and support staff, sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights and justice advocates, and SRH researchers to further understand the gaps in LGA abortion services. The results of this study show that further provision, support and awareness for LGA abortion is warranted, both in the Maritimes and Canada more broadly. La disponibilité des services d'avortement au Canada dépend d'une multitude de facteurs, dont l'âge gestationnel. Bien qu'il n'y ait aucune restriction légale sur le moment où un avortement peut avoir lieu au cours d'une grossesse, les femmes, les hommes trans, les personnes de genre non binaire et les personnes bispirituelles (femmes) ne peuvent obtenir des services d'avortement que jusqu'à 24 semaines de gestation. Ceux qui cherchent un avortement à un âge gestationnel plus tardif (AGT) doivent obtenir des services à l'extérieur du pays. Pour les personnes vivant au Nouveau-Brunswick, en Nouvelle-Écosse ou à l'Île-du-Prince-Édouard (les Maritimes), la disponibilité des services d'avortement est limitée à 15 semaines et 6 jours. Cette étude multi-méthodes visait à comprendre ce que l'on sait actuellement sur l'avortement AGT au Canada et à examiner les expériences des femmes cherchant et obtenant un avortement AGT dans les Maritimes. Nous avons également interrogé des prestataires d'avortement et du personnel de soutien, des défenseurs des droits et de la justice en matière de santé sexuelle et reproductive (SSR) et des chercheurs en SSR afin de mieux comprendre les lacunes dans les soins de santé liés à l'avortement AGT. Les résultats de cette étude montrent qu'une offre, un soutien et une sensibilisation supplémentaires à l'avortement AGT sont justifiés, à la fois dans les Maritimes et au Canada en général.
