Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Sondage Sortie des Urnes (SSU - exit poll) is a large-scale poll conducted at the exit from polling stations on the day of voting. SSUs are a way to understand the key significant sociological and political factors affecting a ballot and in this respect constitute a kind of x-ray of the electorate. For the presidential election, the SSUs provide valuable information on the following elements: - the sociodemographic and political outlines of the vote (who voted for whom?); - the voting motives of the electorate (what issues affect the vote in favour of which candidate?) and also the conditions of voting decisions (at what point did the voters decide?); - the pathways to voting decisions and electoral behaviours; - what voters expect of the candidates; - voting intentions for the second round and voters’ expectations for the post-electoral phase (choice of Prime Minister, preferences for the composition of the government, first measures awaited…). However, this instrument of sociological and political analysis has one clear limitation: it in no way provides reliable indications on the election results, given the number of people who refuse to answer and uncertainty over the sincerity of the answers given. As a result, a SSU is not as reliable as an estimate of results, or even a conventional poll conducted using the quota method. The 1995 SSU files are kept at the CDSP, but the original questionnaire could not be found. The documentation is therefore mainly that produced by the BDSP in 1995, which is considered authentic. The variables that are not documented are identified. The historical value of these data files nevertheless seemed to justify their inclusion in the CDSP’s available archives, especially as the 1995 election was one of the first to trigger significant debates around the validity and utility of opinion polls.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
