Genus PSEUDOMELINA Malloch, 1933 One species, South America only PSEUDOMELINA Malloch, 1933: 307 Type-species: Pseudomelina apicalis Malloch, 1933 (monotypic and original designation) Note: Placement in Sciomyzini is questionable. Marinoni & Mathis (2000) did not address the issue, although they addressed placement of other genera. The original description by Malloch (1933) states, “Agrees in many characters with Melina [= Eutrichomelina] albibasi s, but lacks the propleural [proepisternal] bristle,” a diagnostic character of all species of Sciomyzini except Atrichomelina pubera, in which the propleural seta is greatly reduced. Knutson (1977: 597) compared 5♀ from Aysén, Linares, and Valdivia (CNC, USNM) with the holotype and noted, “The propleural bristle [of the holotype] is absent on either side, and there do not appear to be sockets where these bristles may have been present. Five females from the Canadian National Collection (CNC) compare exactly with the holotype and the description except that the CNC specimens each have a well-developed propleural bristle on each side. The species was adequately described by Malloch (1933). However, in the specimens from the CNC the number of pre-apical anterodorsal bristles on the hind femur, stated as two by Malloch, range from one to three.”
