La campagne de géophysique marine et terrestre SISTEUR réalisée en septembre-octobre 2000 sur la marge active d'Equateur et de Colombie, a été conduite par l'UMR Géosciences Azur (CNRS, IRD, Uni. de Paris 6 et de Nice Sophia-Antipolis) en association avec les marines nationales d'Equateur (INOCAR) et de Colombie (DIMAR), des instituts scientifiques ou compagnie pétrolière nationale de ces deux pays (Petroproduccion, Ingeominas, Ecole Polytechnique Nationale de Quito) et avec la participation de chercheurs et ingénieurs allemand, canadien, colombien, équatoriens, espagnol, monégasque et français. SISTEUR est focalisée sur l'étude des grands séismes de subduction se produisant sous la marge pacifique d'Equateur et Sud Colombie. Dans cette région, la plaque océanique Nazca s'enfonce à 8 cm/an sous la plaque Sud Amérique. Cette convergence a produit quatre séismes dévastateurs, de magnitude 7,8 à 8,8, depuis 1906. Bien que ces grands séismes se produisent essentiellement au contact entre les deux plaques lithosphériques, le long d'une mega-faille plongeant sous la bordure continentale, les raisons du blocage de cette faille, la distribution de la déformation dans la marge et les mécanismes de la rupture sont mal compris.La campagne a donc constitué à étudier ces processus grâce à des équipements de sismique réflexion moderne afin d'obtenir des images acoustiques de la croûte terrestre et à des stations sismiques sous-marines OBS (Ocean Bottom Seismometer). Des stations sismologiques ont été également déployées à terre.
