Proactive Topical Maintenance Treatment of Psoriasis: Subanalysis of Canadian Patients in the Phase III PSO-LONG Trial

Abstract
Plaque psoriasis is a chronic disease that requires long-term management. Although topical therapies are a first-line treatment, maintaining long-term disease control is a challenge. , Topical psoriasis treatment has traditionally relied on a reactive approach to disease flares rather than a proactive long-term approach involving regular application of therapy to previously affected skin areas after they have healed. , The PSO-LONG phase III trial demonstrated the long-term efficacy and safety of twice-weekly calcipotriol 0.005%/betamethasone dipropionate 0.064% (Cal/BD) foam as maintenance treatment for psoriasis. This proactive regimen significantly delayed time to first relapse, reduced relapses, and increased time in remission compared to reactive management, with no new safety signals or skin atrophy. Regional differences in patient demographics and disease characteristics, as well as standards of care, may influence the effect size of treatment interventions. To assess whether the results of the multinational PSO-LONG trial are generalizable to the Canadian psoriasis population, we analyzed the long-term safety and efficacy of proactive Cal/BD foam in the subset of Canadian subjects in the PSO-LONG trial.
