Plus de 800 modifications techniques ont été apportées à cette nouvelle édition. Le CNB renferme les dispositions techniques concernant la conception et la construction de bâtiments neufs. Il s'applique aussi à la transformation des bâtiments, à leur changement d'usage et à la démolition de bâtiments existants. De nouveaux renseignements ont été ajoutés à la version de 2005 du CNB afin de rendre celui-ci plus clair, plus facile à adapter aux bâtiments existants et plus souple relativement aux percées technologiques. Ils expliquent les objectifs que les dispositions du CNB visent à atteindre et décrivent les fonctions qu'un bâtiment ou ses éléments doivent remplir afin de respecter les objectifs. La présentation du CNB, qui est offert en deux volumes, a été modifiée et comprend maintenant trois divisions, soit les divisions A, B et C. La division A comprend les options de conformité, les objectifs et les énoncés fonctionnels. La division B contient les exigences, maintenant appelées « solutions acceptables », concernant divers sujets tels la protection contre l'incendie, la sécurité des occupants et l'accessibilité, les règles de calcul, la séparation des milieux différents, le chauffage, la ventilation et le conditionnement d'air, la plomberie, les maisons et les petits bâtiments. La division C contient les dispositions administratives. Le volume 1 contient les divisions A, B et C; le volume 2, quant à lui, renferme les annexes des divisions ainsi que l'index. Le CNB 2005 est un complément au Code national de prévention des incendies – Canada 2005; les deux documents sont indispensables aux agents du bâtiment, aux éducateurs et aux spécialistes de la construction.
