Abstract
In order to identify any archaeological remains which would be threatened by a new development on land at Bury Green Farm, Bury Green, Little Hadham, Hertfordshire, the Heritage Network was commissioned by Matterhorn Developments Limited to monitor groundworks for the construction of an electrical substation representing the first phase of development. This work was a requirement of the planning consent granted by the local planning authority. The site lies partly within Area of Archaeological Significance No. 377. and has 14 HER entries located within a 500m radius of the site centre. These range in date from the Iron Age to the modern period. The site consisted of two areas, located on either side of the access road (Figure 1), which were excavated down to the natural substratum for the transformers and switch room of the substation. Area 1 (north-east of the road) measured c.30m long by c.8m wide, and Area 2 (south-west of the road) c.20m by c.7m, giving a total coverage of c.380m2. The natural substratum consisted of yellow (2.5Y 7/8) firm sandy clay and occasional flint pebbles, overlain by up to c.0.80m of greyish brown (2.5Y 5/2) compact clayey silt overburden composed of modern made-up ground, containing plastic, brick and concrete fragments. No archaeological finds or features were located during this stage of the monitoring exercise, but it was noted that the depth of made ground suggests that this area had been previously disturbed, and this may have removed any archaeological features that could previously have been present.
