In order to determine the archaeological risk posed by a proposal to construct new housing on land adjacent to 34C Kneesworth Street, Royston, Herts, the Heritage Network was commissioned by the owner to undertake a programme of archaeological evaluation. The site lies at the edge of AAS10, which defines the extent of the medieval settlement of Royston. Part of King James' Palace, a Royal hunting lodge of King James I, survives at No. 23 Kneesworth Street. One 10 x 1.6m trench was excavated across the proposed development footprint. The trench was cut east-west across the slope of the ground and varied in depth from 0.8m to 1.8m The exposed stratigraphy suggests that there had been considerable landscaping of the plot, the natural chalk having been terraced and all the levels subsequently restored. The client also excavated a 1.3 x 0.6m test pit 3m west of the trial trench. At this point the natural chalk was observed at a depth of approximately 0.9m below the surface. Three possible construction layers, consisting of a thick band of redeposited chalk between thin layers of coarse sand, were observed in the northern and western sections of the trench, their location may coincide with the route of an earlier garden path.
