Le concept de fonction apparaît comme un incontournable au deuxième cycle du secondaire (élèves âgés de 14 à 17 ans), mais est également source de nombreuses difficultés. Confrey et Smith (1995) soulignent qu’il existe deux regards distincts, mais complémentaires, pour approcher la fonction : le regard correspondance et le regard covariationnel. À cet effet, des chercheurs (René de Cotret, 1988; Carlson, 1998; Hitt, González et Morasse, 2008; Passaro, 2015) préconisent un travail sur le regard covariationnel en s’intéressant au comportement des accroissements concomitants entre les grandeurs pour préparer les élèves au concept de fonction. Dans le prolongement de ces recherches, notre objectif est d’analyser des manuels du premier cycle du secondaire (élèves de 12-14 ans) pour en dégager leur potentiel quant aux situations susceptibles de développer un regard covariationnel pour préparer les élèves au concept de fonction avant son apprentissage formel. Trois collections de manuels ont été analysées. La sélection des situations pour leur potentiel covariationnel s’appuie sur la présence de points de vue de la covariation (global, local qualitatif et/ou local quantitatif). Par la suite, les situations retenues ont été étudiées à l’aide de 20 variables didactiques qui ont permis de se prononcer sur la variété des situations proposées. Nous avons pu remarquer qu’une emphase est mise sur le regard correspondance au détriment du regard covariationnel. De l’analyse émergente des situations retenues se dégagent des approches différentes pour chacune de ces collections, misant dans un cas sur le point de vue global, pour un autre sur le point de vue local qualitatif et pour le troisième sur le local quantitatif à travers essentiellement les registres description verbale et graphique. Dans plusieurs situations, la formulation des questions et le guidage proposé, s’attardent peu aux accroissements concomitants. Des suggestions de modification de ces situations sont proposées au niveau des variables didactiques et du questionnement pour favoriser la mobilisation du regard covariationnel. \n_____________________________________________________________________________ \nMOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Fonction, covariation, variables didactiques, registre de représentations, manuels scolaires, enseignement secondaire.
