CORRELATION BETWEEN THE MASTERY OF SIMPLE PAST TENSE AND READING COMPREHENSION OF NARRATIVE TEXT AT THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF STATE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1 SENTAJO RAYA

Abstract
This study was aimed at finding out the correlation between the mastery of \nsimple past tense and reading comprehension of narrative texts at the tenth grade \nof State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya. The specific objective of this \nresearch was to find out whether or not there was a significant correlation between \nthe mastery of simple past tense and reading comprehension of some kinds of \nnarrative texts. From 136 students of the population which consisted of 4 classes, \nthe researcher took the 7 students of each class so the total sample is 28 students \nat the tenth grade students of State Senior High School 1 Sentajo Raya as the \nsample. In collecting the data, the researcher used gap-filling-task to measure the \nmastery of simple past tense, and multiple choices test to measure the students’ \nreading comprehension of some kinds of narrativet text. The researcher analyzed \nthe data by using Spearman Rank Order Coefficient formula of SPSS Version \n20.0 because the data was not normally distributed. Based on the results, it was \nfound that the mean of the mastery simple past tense was 67.85 (sufficient level), \nwhile their reading comprehension of narrative text was 64.82 (sufficient level). In \nterms of the correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading \ncomprehension of narrative texts, the researcher found that sig. (2-tailed) < α = \n0.003 < 0.05. Thus, the researcher concluded that H0 was rejected and Ha was \naccepted. Moreover, the researcher found that the value of Spearman Rho (ρ) was \n0.538 which indicated that there was a strong correlation between the two \nvariables. Based on the research findings, it could be concluded that there was a \nsignificant correlation between the mastery of simple past tense and reading \ncomprehension of narrative texts at the tenth grade of State Senior High School 1 \nSentajo Raya. \n \nKeywords: The Mastery of Simple Past Tense, Reading Comprehension, Correlation.
