Abstract
-- \nABSTRACT : Habitat loss and fragmentation play a major role in the alteration of natural habitats used by wildlife. It is therefore needed to develop methods to establish adequate connectivity between isolated habitat patches to maintain the structures and movement of metapopulations. Ecological corridors, which reflect a species' habitat selection and space use behaviours, refer to the concept of functional connectivity and must be mapped to slow and reverse population decline for many species; to do so, it is crucial to understand how landscape components affect connectivity. The woodland caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) is a species in decline that is threatened by human activity, which facilitates predator movement and increases in abundance. Describing connectivity within caribou range and better understanding its threats would help guide forest managers in their efforts to maintain and restore connectivity. We used GPS data gathered between 2004 and 2019 from 438 female caribou located in 10 different ranges that were part of the distribution range in Québec to map, analyze and validate corridors of connectivity. We used a resource selection function to create a map of caribou relative occurrence probability and then a map depicting the resistance to caribou movement by the modified managed matrix. We used these analyses and electrical circuit theory to map the most favourable corridors of functional connectivity depicted (as electrical currents) available between (and within) population ranges. Our connectivity model was very robust when tested with independent data. Corridors with high current intensity were mainly found in the eastern portion of the province and north of the Northern limit for timber allocation showing the extent of the human footprint in caribou habitat by forest management. Mature coniferous stands and dry open areas were the main habitats found in corridors and core habitat, supporting the need to protect these habitats at the landscape scale in conservation and restoration plans for caribou habitat over extensive areas. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Corridors, electrical circuit theory, functional connectivity, human and natural disturbances, modelling, movement, relative habitat quality.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.
