Cette recherche, qui a pour but de vérifier si les représentations de soi et les représentations d'objet diffèrent chez des sujets de structure de personnalité différentes, s'inscrit dans le champ des théories développementales de la personnalité et des relations d'objet. Pour vérifier cette hypothèse, cinquante sujets adultes (trente femmes et vingt hommes) vus en psychothérapie dans la région de Québec ont été répartis en trois groupes en fonction d'une évaluation structurale de leur personnalité : névrotiques (NÉV), limite de haut niveau (LIM) et limite de bas niveau (PSY). Les relations d'objet des sujets sont évaluées à l'aide de l'Object Relations Inventory (ORI) et de l'Assessment of Self Descriptions (ASD), instruments mis au point par Sidney J. Blatt et ses collaborateurs (1992, 1993) pour mesurer respectivement les représentations d'objet et les représentations de soi. Les résultats indiquent que certaines caractéristiques des représentations d'objet sont significativement différentes chez les sujets du groupe NÉV et ceux du groupe PSY; quant aux représentations de soi, on observe le même type de différence pour une variable, alors que pour une autre, les sujets du groupe NÉV se distinguent de ceux des deux autres groupes. Cette recherche a aussi permis de générer des données sur la structure interne de l'ASD. Enfin, des résultats préliminaires semblent indiquer que la notion de représentation d'objet pourrait être en partie incluse dans celle de représentation de soi.
