Abstract

Aquatic habitat fragmentation due to stream crossings has been a major study case for the past years. Close to 10 million hectares of land are assigned as exploration mineral title in the Quebec province and yet, no scientific literature focused specifically on fish passage impediment in these territories. In August 2022, 39 stream crossings including 29 culverts were assessed on both road and train network of the old Schefferville’s mines. Fish passage impediment was assessed for 4 size groups of salmonids and 2 size groups of other fish species found in this environment, using the Ecological Connectivity Index (ICE) decision tree. More than 50 % of stream crossings showed fish passage impediment for all fish groups. Mean velocities, water depths, unsuitable outlet drop along with debris accumulation and logjam were the main bottleneck variables. The results highlight the need to also integrate small-bodied individuels in fish passage assessment and the requirement to establish a restoration strategy after the mining exploitation.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
