Het niet gestandaardiseerde Frans van Quebec verschilt sterk van het Frans dat in Parijs wordt gesproken. Dit komt doordat de taal van de Quebecois zich los van het Frans van Frankrijk heeft ontwikkeld, waardoor bijvoorbeeld bepaalde voor de Fransen archaïsche woorden in het Frans van Quebec nog steeds voorkomen. Daarnaast ondervindt de taal veel invloed van het Engels. Deze taalsituatie wordt weerspiegeld in de literatuur van Quebec: de meertalige werkelijkheid wordt nagebootst en/of taal wordt gethematiseerd. In vertaling vormt de taalkwestie een vertaalprobleem, omdat het lastig is een meertalige tekst weer te geven in een doeltaal: verhoudingen tussen talen zijn moeilijk weer te geven in één andere (gestandaardiseerde) taal. Het doel van dit onderzoek is om inzicht te verkrijgen in de manier waarop de problematiek omtrent taal en identiteit is ingebed in de literatuur van Quebec, welke vertaalproblemen deze talige verschijnselen met zich meebrengen en hoe deze (kunnen) worden opgelost door vertalers.
