Abstract
The Alfred University football team lost its fourth straight game Saturday, falling to Hobart College, 20-14.Alfred and Hobart were deadlocked at 14-14 when the Statesmen scored the gamewinning touchdown with 9:13 left.Alfred's final drive ended when the Saxons turned the ball over on downs at the Hobart 26-yard line with 36 seconds left.The Saxons (2-5) lost despite a 376-327 advantage in total offense and a five-minute advantage in time of possession.Alfred had a 6-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, courtesy of a pair of 26-yard field goals by senior placekicker Ryan Rambacher (Bemus Point/Maple Grove).Hobart (5-1) scored touchdowns in the second and third quarters on a 33-yard pass from quarterback Dan Birdsall to wide receiver Scott Yoder and a 25-yard run by tailback Keith Brandon to go up 14-6.Alfred tied the game with 12:11 left in the fourth quarter when sophomore tailback Jesse Raynor (Weedsport/Weedsport) scored on a seven-yard run and caught a pass from junior quarterback Todd Zandrowicz (East Aurora/East Aurora) for the two-point conversion.Hobart scored the game winner on a five-yard pass from Birdsall to Yoder.Alfred piled up 225 yards on the ground, with Raynor rushing for 127 yards on only 16 carries.Zandrowicz threw for 151 yards on 12 completions.Raynor had a team-high five catches for 69 yards while senior tailback George Eason (Oswego/Oswego) caught three passes for 50 yards.Alfred's 376 yards in offense came against a Hobart defense that had been giving up only 227 yards per game (134 rushing, 93 passing).Brandon had a game-high 170 rushing yards for Hobart, while Birdsall threw for 162 yards, with two scores and an interception.Yoder caught a game-high seven passes for 93 yards and pair of TDs.Senior strong safety Brian Keefer (Jamestown/Maple Grove) led the Saxons' defense with eight tackles, including three for losses and 1.5 sacks, while senior linebacker Tom Phelan (Middletown/Chicopee) had four tackles and an interception.Hobart's defense was led by defensive tackle Rich Barlette and defensive end Rob Gould with 12 and 11 tackles, respectively.Alfred is in action next on Saturday, Oct. 28, at home against William Paterson.Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m.
