RÉSUMÉ: Le déclin du caribou de la Gaspésie-Atlantique (Rangifer tarandus caribou) serait attribuable à l'expansion des perturbations anthropiques dans son aire de répartition. Les coupes forestières et les structures linéaires entraîneraient la perte directe ou fonctionnelle des habitats préférentiels du caribou et généreraient des caractéristiques d'habitat favorisant ses prédateurs. Afin de rétablir cette population, un plan d'aménagement forestier préconise l'application de coupes forestières extensives dans son aire de répartition. L'objectif principal du projet était d'évaluer les impacts des coupes forestières sur l'habitat du caribou à deux échelles spatiales. Les sous-objectifs étaient de 1) quantifier les perturbations anthropiques dans l'aire de répartition du caribou et son habitat essentiel, une zone où les activités anthropiques sont réglementées, et 2) comparer les impacts de traitements sylvicoles sur les attributs d'habitat utilisés par le caribou, ses prédateurs (l'ours noir, Ursus americanus, et le coyote, Canis latrans) et une proie alternative (l'orignal, Alces americanus). Environnement Canada (2008,2011) a développé un modèle basé sur une relation recrutement - perturbations reliant les perturbations totales d'un territoire à la probabilité d'autosuffisance de la population. Avec ce modèle, nous avons démontré que les taux de perturbation dans l'aire de répartition du caribou (75%) et son habitat essentiel (61%) étaient plus élevés que le seuil de 35 - 45% qu'il est recommandé de ne pas dépasser. Ces taux élevés s'expliquaient par la présence des nombreuses structures linéaires et leur zone d'influence. Pour notre second sous-objectif; nous avons échantillonné 291 sites dans sept types de traitements sylvicoles, suivant un gradient de sévérité.
\nUne analyse canonique de corespondance partielle a démontré que les forêts résineuses matures présentaient les caractéristiques d'habitat les plus favorables au caribou, mais que celles des traitements peu sévères étaient similaires. Les traitements plus sévères favorisaient les prédateurs, en supportant davantage d'arbustes fruitiers et de brout pour l'orignal. Nos résultats suggèrent qu'un régime extensif est une stratégie de conservation pertinente pour le caribou à l'échelle du peuplement. Cependant,la création supplémentaire de structures linéaires n'est pas souhaitable. \nThe expansion of anthropogenic disturbances within the range of Atlantic-Gaspésie caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) is the main cause identified to explain the decline of this population. Logging and linear structures have resulted in direct or functional losses of the preferential habitats of caribou and generated suitable habitat characteristics for its predators. A forest management plan, implemented as a conservation strategy for this caribou population, advocates the application of extensive silviculture within the caribou range. The main objective of our study was to assess the impacts of forest management on the habitat of caribou, at two spatial scales. More precisely, we aimed at 1) quantifying the level of anthropogenic disturbances within the range of caribou and its critical habitat, an area where human activities are restricted, and 2) comparing the impacts of silvicultural treatments on habitat attributes used by caribou, its predators (black bear, Ursus americanus, and coyote, Canis latrans) and an alternative prey (moose, Alces americanus). Environment Canada (2008, 2011) developed a model based on a recruitment - disturbance relationship, which links the total disturbance within a caribou range to the population self-sustainability. Based on this model, we showed that disturbance levels within the caribou range (75%) and the critical habitat (61%) were higher than the recommended threshold of 35 - 45%. These high disturbance levels were essentially induced by the footprint of numerous linear structures. At the second scale, we sampled 291 sites representative of seven types of silvicultural treatments along a gradient of severity.
\nA partial canonical correspondence analysis showed that mature coniferous forests offer good habitat conditions for caribou, while low-severity treatments maintain comparable conditions. More severe treatments were beneficial to predators as they support more fruit-bearing shrubs and moose browsing. Our results suggest that an extensive forest regime could be a relevant conservation strategy for caribou at the stand level, but that the associated increase in linear structures would appear undesirable.
