Abstract
1500 m au nord de la ville de Lunel (Hérault), l’établissement agricole du Mas de Fourques apparaît au milieu du Ier s. ap. J. ‑C., et est abandonné à la fin du IIe s. Il est situé dans une zone de piémont de costière, dans les marges des territoires des agglomérations gallo-romaines d’Ambrussum et de Lunel-Viel, secteur faiblement occupé au haut Empire. La fouille réalisée durant l’été 2006 sur un demi-hectare a révélé trois bâtiments couvrant une surface supérieure à 420 m ² : un logis, une probable bergerie et un chai. Quelques hectares de vigne, quelques fruitiers, peut-être un peu de bétail : l’étude conduit à souligner la modestie des structures de production du Mas de Fourques. Le piémont, et a fortiori les costières, demeurent semble-t-il à l’écart du développement de l’agriculture extensive que connaissent les zones basses durant le haut Empire. Peut-être la petite exploitation à vocation polyculturale est-elle la mieux à même de faire valoir ces terroirs marginaux ?
