Chers confrres, J'eus le grand honneur, il y a quelques annes dj, de vou& parler de la vie scolaire Metz avant et pendant la Rvolution franaise.J'avais insist, vous vous en souvenez, sur le caractre national et franais de l'enseignement dans notre cit.C'est pratiquement le mme trait de Westphalie, sign le 24 octobre 1648 par l'empereur Ferdinand III, qui cda au roi de France Louis XIV -par l'article 72 -la suprme seigneurie et les droits de souverainet sur les vchs de Metz, Toul et Verdun, possds sans titre de droit par la France depuis prs d'un sicle (1552) et par l'article 75, tous les droits, possessions et juridictions sur l'Alsace, de Baie au Palatinat, sauf la ville libre de Strasbourg et la rpublique de Mulhouse.On sait que le cardinal Mazarin se flicita de Vacquisition d'une si belle, grande et opulente province comme est l'Alsace , dont la capitale, Strasbourg, devenait son tour, aprs la capitulation devant l'arme de Louvois (30 septembre 1681) ville franaise.On sait aussi que, dans les Trois-Evchs, les autorits franaises n'eurent rgler, ni en 1552 ni en 1648, de problmes linguistiques ou scolaires.Il n'en fut pas de mme en Alsace !Dans cette belle province au dialecte et aux coutumes germaniques, aprs avoir montr la force de son glaive, Louis XIV voulut tmoigner de la gnrosit de son coeur.Loin de lui ce procd moderne de dpcher, imm-
