Le diabète de type 2 (DT2) est plus prévalent chez les personnes vieillissantes physiquement inactives que chez celles qui sont actives. Pour prévenir et contrôler la maladie, la pratique d’activité physique est recommandée auprès de cette population. Parmi les institutions qui émettent ces recommandations, plusieurs, tel que Diabète Canada, suggèrent l’exercice par intervalles à haute intensité (HIIT) de courte durée (intervalle à haute intensité ≤ 1 min). Il a déjà été suggéré que des intervalles plus longs pourraient favoriser des adaptations physiologiques de plus grande ampleur, notamment au regard de la capacité cardiorespiratoire. Cela dit, il a été montré que l’augmentation soudaine de la quantité d’exercice pourrait être compensée par une réduction des niveaux d’activité physique habituels ou une augmentation des comportements sédentaires, ce que l’on nomme les comportements compensatoires. Cependant, il existe certaines contradictions dans la littérature et aucune étude ne s’est attardée aux différentes modalités d’exercice par intervalles. À ce jour, il n'existe toujours pas de consensus sur les effets de l'exercice par intervalles à haute intensité sur les niveaux d'activité physique et le temps sédentaire après l'effort chez une population âgée souffrant de maladies chroniques qui affectent le métabolisme énergétique, comme le DT2. De plus, il n'y a pas de consensus sur l'impact de la durée des intervalles à haute intensité sur les comportements compensatoires en matière d'activité physique.
