Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

| This article reports on a national survey of information literacy (Il) instruction in urban and rural\npublic libraries in Canada and public librarians' attitudes towards these services. The survey is the first\nphase of a study exploring the actual and potential role of Canadian public libraries in developing the\npublic's Il skills. Despite an urgent need to develop such skills, and expectations that public libraries\nfulfill that role (specifically articulated by the federal government through its 'Connecting Canadians'\ninitiative), the real experiences of public librarians and of public library customers may not bear out this\nexpectation. The survey analyzes the role of the public library, as a non-profit institution and primary\nstakeholder, in advancing federal government information policy. In addition, the study gives voice to\na community of professionals expected to fulfill an important federal policy function, but provided with\nfew resources with which to do so.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
