Plusieurs groupes sanguins sont actuellement connus chez le chien : les groupes du système DEA, le Kai 1 et le Kai 2, le Dal. Le Dal a été découvert il y a près de dix ans chez une chienne de race dalmatien ayant reçu plusieurs transfusions. Les chiens Dal-négatifs ne portent pas à la surface de la membrane de leurs érythrocytes d’antigène Dal. Lorsqu’ils sont transfusés par une première transfusion avec du sang Dal-positif, les chiens se sensibilisent au Dal et créer des anticorps anti-Dal. Au bout de quatre jours et jusqu’à la fin de leur vie, s’ils sont de nouveau transfusés avec du sang Dal-positif, ils sont susceptibles de déclencher une réaction hémolytique à médiation immune pouvant être mortelle, en effet le Dal semble être un groupe sanguin très immunogène. La prévalence du groupe sanguins Dal varie en fonction des races de chiens et de la géographie. En Amérique du Nord 11,7% des dalmatiens et 42,4% des dobermans sont Dal-négatif, Au Canada 2% des Beagles testés sont Dal-négatifs. Ce travail de thèse a permis d’évaluer, la répartition du groupe sanguin Dal dans une population de 204 chiens fréquentant Vetagrosup et ses alentours, révélant 4,9% des chiens Dal-négatif. Le chien ne possède pas d’alloanticorps anti-Dal avant d’être transfusé, il est fortement recommandé d’effectuer un crossmatch entre le receveur et les potentiels donneurs lors de polytransfusions chez un chien et de grouper certains individus des banques sanguines canines pour le Dal, afin de garde en réserves des chiens Dal-négatif disponibles en cas de besoin. Ce travail s’inscrit dans la mise au point d’un sérum monoclonal anti-Dal fiable pour la détection ce groupe.
