Abstract
Cette étude qualitative est consacrée aux stratégies de résistance contre l’isolement mises en oeuvre par les travailleuses domestiques étrangères à Montréal. Admises au pays par le biais du Programme des aides familiaux résidants (PAFR), ces travailleuses migrantes originaires de \npays « du Sud » sont embauchées par des ménages canadiens pour effectuer à domicile le travail reproductif (soins aux personnes et entretien domestique). Soumises à des conditions professionnelles et migratoires très strictes, les candidates du PAFR ont notamment l’obligation \nde résider chez leurs employeurs pendant une période minimale de 24 mois. Cette contrainte au logement est largement dénoncée en raison de l’état de disponibilité permanente et de l’isolement dans lesquels elle est susceptible de plonger les travailleuses. Partant de ce constat, la recherche vise, d’une part, à identifier les facteurs contribuant à isoler les aides familiales, et \nd’autre part, à comprendre comment celles-ci répondent à ces contraintes en développant des stratégies de résistance. À partir d’une posture de recherche féministe, cette étude a été menée par entretiens semi-dirigés auprès de onze femmes en cours de réalisation ou ayant récemment \ncomplété le PAFR. L’analyse révèle que les facteurs liés à la relation professionnelle entre les aides familiales et leurs employeurs, aux conditions de travail, aux lieux d’exercice de la profession, et à la mobilité des travailleuses façonnent les expériences du PAFR et influent sur l’expérience de l’isolement. Les stratégies de résistance répertoriées montrent qu’en dépit de la rigidité des conditions professionnelles et migratoires qui leur sont imposées, les travailleuses exercent leur agentivité pour contester les rapports de pouvoir. This qualitative research is devoted to the strategies of resistance against isolation implemented by foreign domestic workers in Montreal. Admitted to the country under the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP), these foreign workers from the global South are hired by Canadian households \nto accomplish reproductive labour (caregiving and household maintenance). The candidates of the LCP are subject to very strict professional and migratory conditions, in particular they are required to live in their employers household for a period of at least 24 months. This live-in requirement is widely criticized due to the condition of permanent availability and of the isolation in which the workers are most likely to endure. Based on these observations, this research aims on the one hand, to identify the factors that contribute to the isolation of the workers, and on the \nother hand, to understand how they deal with these limitations by developing strategies of resistance. From a feminist standpoint, this analysis was conducted by semi-structured interviews with eleven women in the process of achieving or having completed the LCP. This study reveals that the factors related to the professional relations between the workers and their employers, to the work conditions, to the locations of professional practice as well as the mobility of the workers shape their experience of the LCP and influence their experience of isolation. The \nlisted strategies of resistance show that despite the strict professional and migratory constraints \nforced upon them, the live-in caregivers exert their agency to resist against oppression.
