Dans la littérature sur la tolérance, très peu d’attention est accordée aux arguments épistémiques. De plus, lorsqu’ils sont abordés, on semble faire presque exclusivement référence à l’argument de John Stuart Mill selon lequel la tolérance contribue à l’atteinte de la vérité. On ne distingue pas entre les types d’arguments épistémiques. Ce mémoire vise entre autres à combler ce manque en offrant une meilleure cartographie des différents types d’arguments épistémiques afin de mieux en comprendre les possibilités, les limites, les forces et les faiblesses. L’objectif de ce mémoire est premièrement d’identifier les différents types d’arguments épistémiques pour la tolérance religieuse et ensuite de les analyser. Mon analyse portera sur la structure des arguments et leur robustesse, sur leur acceptabilité potentielle par les croyants ainsi que sur la forme de tolérance qui est supportée par ces arguments. Un deuxième objectif de ce mémoire est d’exemplifier les arguments épistémiques pour la tolérance religieuse qui sont formulés par des auteurs qui mobilisent des ressources des religions chrétienne et musulmane. Les quatre types d’arguments épistémiques identifiés dans le mémoire sont (1) le faillibilisme, (2) le processus de formation des croyances, (3) la parité épistémique et (4) l’accès différencié au message de Dieu. Une conclusion qui ressort de l’analyse de ces arguments est qu’ils peuvent fournir une justification pour la tolérance de toutes les croyances religieuses, mais qu’ils ne permettent pas de tracer de limites entre ce qui doit être toléré et ce qui ne le doit pas dans le domaine de l’action (au-delà de l’expression des croyances).
