Afin d’apporter un éclairage plus précis sur les enjeux du célibat féminin québécois, cette enquête d’histoire orale présente un portrait qualitatif des modes de vie de 18 femmes célibataires québécoises au cours de la période qui va de 1940 à 1970. En délimitant et nommant les diverses réalités liées au célibat laïque féminin, cette recherche transcende une vision caricaturale de la vieille fille. Tout d’abord, un bilan historiographique examine l’espace social alloué aux célibataires dans des sociétés européennes et nord-américaines privilégiant le mariage ou la vie religieuse comme seules voies honorables pour les femmes. Nous y découvrons la quête de femmes qui ont réagi à la perception de l’état de célibat comme une déviance à la norme sociale et qui ont réclamé, en public ou en privé, le droit de suivre une troisième voie qui se définissait comme une alternative au mariage et à la vie religieuse. Puis nous suivons les trajectoires de 18 célibataires québécoises nées entre 1910 et 1943 dans leur espace familial, sociétal et intime. Le concept d’agentivité met en lumière le décalage entre l’espace social potentiellement alloué aux célibataires et celui qu’elles ont effectivement occupé dans la réalité. Plutôt que des vieilles filles stéréotypées trop souvent perçues comme des victimes du destin, nous découvrons des femmes qui ont fait preuve d’agentivité, à la mesure de leurs moyens, des célibataires qui s’inscrivent dans l’histoire des femmes du Québec.
