La malattia da reflusso gastroesofageo (GERD) è una condizione clinica con una prevalenza fino al 25% nei paesi occidentali. I sintomi tipici della GERD includono bruciore di stomaco e rigurgito retrosternale. Le modifiche dello stile di vita, incluse quelle alimentari, sono considerate un approccio terapeutico di prima linea. Per valutare l'impatto delle abitudini di vita sulla GERD in questo studio trasversale, abbiamo utilizzato i dati raccolti tramite un sondaggio online da 1.146 partecipanti. La GERD è stata definita secondo il Consensus di Montreal. Per tutti i partecipanti, sono state registrate le caratteristiche cliniche e dello stile di vita. Complessivamente, 723 partecipanti (63,1%) hanno consumato una dieta che include alimenti di origine animale (non-vegani), mentre 423 partecipanti (36,9%) erano vegani. La prevalenza della GERD era dell'11% (IC 95%, 9%-14%) nei non-vegani e del 6% (IC 95%, 4%-8%) nei vegani. Nell'analisi multivariata, dopo aver tenuto conto dei fattori confondenti, i soggetti con una dieta non-vegana erano associati a un aumento del doppio nella prevalenza della GERD rispetto ai vegani (OR=1,96, IC 95%, 1,22-3,17, p=0,006). Anche il BMI e l'abitudine al fumo erano significativamente associati alla GERD. Questo studio mostra che una dieta a base di alimenti di origine animale (carne, pesce, pollame, latticini e uova) è associata a un aumento del rischio di GERD rispetto a una dieta vegana. Questi risultati potrebbero fornire informazioni utili per la gestione dello stile di vita dei pazienti con sintomi correlati alla GERD.
