On appelle la « crise du verglas de 1998 » une tempête synoptique hivernale de pluie verglaçante – aussi appelée « verglas massif » – qui a eu lieu dans le Nord-Est de l’Amérique du Nord, principalement dans le sud du Québec, et qui a produit un sinistre majeur avec effets en cascade, du 4 au 10 janvier 1998. La crise a eu des répercussions météorologiques, sociales, économiques, psychologiques et technologiques importantes, qui ont duré une vingtaine d’années. La tempête a suscité une prise de conscience de la vulnérabilité humaine face aux phénomènes météorologiques violents, au verglas, au froid, à l’hiver et à la dépendance à l’énergie. Ce phénomène météo est considéré le plus marquant du 20e siècle au Québec, et l’un des désastres naturels météorologiques qui ont causé le plus de dommages matériels en Amérique du Nord. L’objectif de cet article est de faire un bilan des effets matériels, humains et socioculturels d’un événement météorologique violent de grande ampleur en revenant sur ce que sont le verglas, l’hiver et le froid ; en tentant d’établir la suite d’effets qui, à partir de la météo, a provoqué une série de nuisances qui ont tour à tour donné une impression d’apocalypse ; en tirant quelques conclusions qui permettent d’ouvrir de nouveaux chantiers de recherche en matière de prévention, de commémoration, de communication et de réaction quant à notre illusion d’immunité et de contrôle face à l’environnement naturel.
