Nos sociétés connaissent de profondes transformations. Les repères communs autrefois partagés par tous ont été chamboulés. Au nombre des caractéristiques sociales actuelles, on remarque notamment un repli de l'individu dans la sphère privée, l'émergence de diverses crises de confiance, une montée de l'individualisme et une déresponsabilisation sociale. Ces éléments affaiblissent le lien social, pourtant essentiel au fonctionnement des sociétés démocratiques. Face à cette situation, d'aucuns s'inquiètent du devenir de nos sociétés, et plus particulièrement de l'avenir des jeunes générations. Une voie de solution semble retenir plus particulièrement l'attention de divers États de par le monde: il s'agit de l'ajout des programmes d'éducation à la citoyenneté à l'école. Diverses finalités ont été associées à ces programmes, dont certaines ont trait aux transformations sociales actuelles: encourager la participation citoyenne, promouvoir une citoyenneté responsable et initier au vivre-ensemble. Effectivement, lorsque l'éducation à la citoyenneté initie une citoyenneté ancrée dans les dimensions sociales et pédagogiques, elle participe au renouvellement du lien social. Pour cette raison, il demeure souhaitable d'organiser l'éducation à la citoyenneté selon un paradigme qui favorise l'engagement social du citoyen. C'est dans cette perspective que nous avons cherché à identifier un paradigme d'éducation à la citoyenneté pour coordonner les initiatives éducatives dans les écoles au Québec. Cette recherche nous a menés à documenter la visée heuristique du paradigme pédagogique de l'éducation à la citoyenneté, développé par François Galichet. Ce paradigme a retenu notre attention puisqu'il prépare à une citoyenneté qui renouvelle le lien social par la pédagogie. Dans le cadre de ce mémoire, nous approfondissons comment le paradigme pédagogique de Galichet peut répondre aux défis actuels, dans le contexte québécois.
