Les termes de réhabilitation, interprétation et histoires paysagères sont les prémisses de la démarche de nos projets sur des sites d’intérêt patrimonial lesquels constituent une partie importante de notre travail. L'idée que le patrimoine est une chose vivante, un concept évolutif et que les éléments constitutifs de l’histoire d’un lieu sont inhérents au sens qu’il porte guide notre approche. Mieux, elle est source d’inspiration. Bien des données d’un projet, comme le patrimoine, peuvent paraître contraignantes : notre but est de renverser cette attitude. La présentation porte sur la mise en valeur d'un lieu historique et emblématique de Montréal, le square Dorchester et la place du Canada, réalisé en 2008-2010. Il est montré par quels moyens cet espace public historique, longtemps négligé, a été réhabilité pour lui donner un nouveau souffle. Son réaménagement a donné lieu à un espace où mémoire et identité du lieu ont été soumises aux valeurs d'aujourd'hui. Les stratégies de design ont donné forme à des espaces de facture contemporaine, sans que ses valeurs historiques ne soient dénaturées. Nous croyons que si l'intervention sur des sites d'intérêt patrimonial demande une certaine précaution pour maintenir son patrimoine, il est possible de créer de nouvelles expériences de lieu, d’innover et de surprendre. Le design du square Dorchester et de la place du Canada à Montréal incarne cette idée un peu folle qu’innovations paysagères et conservation du paysage sont des termes non opposés.
