La piodermite è una patologia comunemente riscontrata nel cane, caratterizzata da un notevole polimorfismo clinico.L'obiettivo dell'indagine è stato quello di valutare, in un periodo di due anni, la prevalenza delle piodermiti, diagnosticate presso il Dipartimento di Clinica Veterinaria e porre la diagnosi in relazione alla razza, sesso, tipologia, distribuzione delle lesioni e le principali malattie predisponenti. Per questo studio sono stati selezionati 113 soggetti tra i molti presentati per una visita dermatologica presso l’Ospedale Didattico Veterinario "Mario Modenato" di S. Piero a Grado, nel periodo di tempo compreso tra gennaio 2010 e dicembre 2011. La diagnosi di piodermite è stata formulata dopo valutazione dei dati anamnestici, dei segni clinici e dopo l’esclusione delle principali diagnosi differenziali. La popolazione di cani oggetto dello studio è stata confrontata con quella dei cani pervenuti all’Ospedale Didattico nel periodo 2010-2011. Fra i cani con piodermite è risultata una prevalenza dei maschi (62,83%) sulle femmine (37,17%). Le razze maggiormente predisposte allo sviluppo di piodermite nella nostra popolazione sono il Pastore tedesco(20,35%), il Bulldog inglese (7,96%), e il Dogo argentino (1,77%). Dei 113 cani 100 presentavano piodermite secondaria a Dermatite atopica e 13 piodermite secondaria ad altre cause. Nei 13 cani con piodermite non secondaria a DA abbiamo individuato una prevalenza di pustole (53,85%), di ulcere e fistole (38,4%) e un maggiore coinvolgimento del dorso e dei fianchi (76,9%) rispetto ai 100. In considerazione del fatto che la gran parte dei cani con piodermite erano anche affetti da Dermatite atopica (100 su 113) abbiamo eseguito, parallelamente alla nostra ricerca, un’indagine epidemiologica cercando di mettere in evidenza le prevalenze di sesso e razza nella popolazione di 208 cani atopici osservata nello stesso periodo. Tra i 208 cani atopici abbiamo individuato una prevalenza dei maschi (57,69%) sulle femmine (42,31%). Le razze maggiormente rappresentate fra i cani con DA sono il Labrador (12,98%), il Golden retriever(5,29%), il Pastore tedesco (12,50%) e il Dogo argentino (1,44%) e il West Highland White Terrier (1,92%).
