Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

-- ABSTRACT: This study focused on the reproductive phenology of the Black-Capped chickadee and the Boreal chickadee, two parids residing in eastern Quebec (Rimouski, Canada). First, we aimed to determine the rate of synchrony between the reproductive phenology of the two chickadee species and the phenology of the different arthropods they consume. Then, we assess the impact of synchrony on their reproductive success. Our hypotheses were that Boreal and Black-Capped chickadees adjust their reproduction, so the nestlings are reared during the period of maximum prey availability. Synchrony should therefore strongly influence the reproductive success of chickadees and the parental provisioning effort. To meet these objectives, in 2017 and 2018 we monitored the reproduction of the two chickadee species with a network of artificial nesting boxes equipped with radio frequency identification systems. At the same time, we sampled the arthropods in the vegetation and determined the daily abundance and biomass available. In this study, the synchrony was measured as the temporal overlap between the nestling period and duration of the availability peaks (abundance and biomass) of the different prey groups. Our study showed that Black-Capped and Boreal chickadees at our study site in eastern Quebec have their reproductive phenology synchronized with the peak abundance and biomass of lepidopteran larvae. This synchrony is particularly important for adults, as a high synchrony with the peak of lepidopteran larvae biomass decreases the probability of nestling loss. The measurement of synchrony with several groups of prey also made it possible to highlight the qualitative potential of spiders as complementary food source for nestling. -- Mot(s) clé(s) en anglais : Synchrony, Reproductive success, Provisioning rate, Arthropods, Phenology, Food availability, Paridae.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
