Abstract
Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com objetivo de elucidar os elementos que possibilitaram ao Banco de Desenvolvimento do Espírito Santo (BANDES) adentrar o século XXI e compor juntamente com o Banco de Desenvolvimento de Minas Gerais (BDMG) e o Banco de Desenvolvimento do Extremo Sul \n(BDRE) as últimas três instituições do sistema de bancos de desenvolvimento estaduais em atividade no país. Como forma de compreender a evolução do banco de fomento capixaba, buscou-se analisar a trajetória do BANDES a partir do período de estabilização monetária que inicia-se com a implantação do \nPlano Real. Por fim, utilizou-se como instrumentos de pesquisa os seguintes documentos: relatórios, balanços patrimoniais, entrevistas com ex-presidentes e integrantes da diretoria do banco
