In 2005 werd voor het eerst melding gemaakt van personen die met mrsa besmet waren geraakt door contact met varkens. Deze Nederlandse bevinding leidde tot een ‘pilotstudy’ bij negen slachthuizen waaruit bleek dat 39 procent van de varkens en 81 procent van de slacht-‘batches’ drager was van mrsa. Al de geïsoleerde stammen behoorden tot een specifieke kloon die niet typeerbaar was met de tot dan toe door het rivm gebruikte standaardgenotyperingsmethode (Pulsed Field Gel Electroforesis met SmaI). Daarom werd aanvankelijk de naam niet typeerbare mrsa (nt-mrsa) geïntroduceerd. Ook werd de naam varkensmrsa gebruikt vanwege het voorkomen van de bacterie in varkens. Omdat nu bekend is dat de kloon ook voorkomt in andere productiedieren, wordt de term veegerelateerde mrsa gebruikt (internationaal: Livestock Associated mrsa (la-mrsa)). Recent is in China en Maleisië echter nog een andere mrsa-kloon gevonden die in Azië een brede verspreiding lijkt te hebben onder varkens. la-mrsa beperkt zich dus niet tot de specifieke kloon (‘sequence type’ (st) 398) die voorkomt in Europa, de Verenigde Staten en Canada.
