Abstract
In de jaren negentig arriveerde, de van oorsprong Somalische vrouw, Ayaan Hirsi Ali als vluchteling in Nederland. Ze was islamitisch opgevoed, maar na de aanslagen van 11 september 2001, verdampte haar geloof in een God. Hirsi Ali was in de periode tussen 2002 en 2006 een belangrijke deelnemer aan het integratiedebat in Nederland. In dit debat betoogde zij dat de islam het grootste obstakel was voor de integratie van moslims in de Nederlandse samenleving. De islam was, in Hirsi Ali’s optiek, in de huidige vorm onverenigbaar met de Nederlandse democratie. \n \nIn deze scriptie wordt de bijdrage van Hirsi Ali aan de integratie van moslims, tussen 2002 en 2006, onderzocht. Dit wordt gedaan aan de hand van Hirsi Ali’s opvattingen. Door middel van close reading van haar publicaties worden haar opvattingen blootgelegd en vergeleken met belangrijke voorgangers in het Nederlandse integratiedebat. Tevens worden de reacties op de publicaties van Hirsi Ali tussen 2002 en 2006 onderzocht. \n \nUit het onderzoek blijkt dat Hirsi Ali met haar opvattingen een breuk veroorzaakte tussen de Nederlandse moslimgemeenschap en haarzelf. Voorts brachten haar publicaties ook een breuk tussen de Nederlandse moslimgemeenschap en de autochtone Nederlanders teweeg. Uit deze bevindingen wordt geconcludeerd, dat de bijdrage van Hirsi Ali’s opvattingen aan de integratie van moslims in de Nederlandse samenleving, in de periode tussen 2002 en 2006, betwistbaar is.
