Las estructuras desplegables y las estructuras espaciales fijas comparten fundamentalmente un parecido visual, son estructuras muy similares formalmente, pero sin embargo, son completamente diferentes intrínsecamente. Ambas estructuras son temas muy extensos dentro de la arquitectura, por lo que generan un gran rango de posibilidades en las que indagar y profundizar dentro de estos campos. Las estructuras desplegables tienen la característica destacable de ser transformables, ser capaces de desplegarse y cambiar. Mientras que las estructuras espaciales fijas, están diseñadas para ser y permanecer en un lugar determinado. Comparativamente, tienen muchos aspectos en común, en cuanto a configuración y apariencia; pero la arquitectura no es exclusivamente forma. Un análisis más profundo de las mismas, permite extraer los puntos en los que ambas toman caminos diferentes; en base a su geometría, las uniones y enlaces, como se llevan a cabo constructivamente, o su montaje, pueden ser algunos puntos destacables, así como la posibilidad de las aplicaciones dentro de la arquitectura, que se han dado a lo largo de su historia, que se dan hoy en día y las que se podrán llegar a dar. El Pabellón transportable para exposiciones de 1964 de Emilio Pérez Piñero y el Pabellón de Estados Unidos para la Exposición Mundial de Montreal de 1967 de Richard Buckminster Fuller, son dos proyectos muy representativos de este tipo de estructuras, desplegables y fijas, respectivamente. Estos dos proyectos seleccionados como estudios de casos fueron realizados en los años 60 por autores innovadores, creativos y grandes arquitectos. Tienen más en común más de lo que parece, y no tanto como quieren dar a entender ambos proyectos; es por esto por lo que se han seleccionado para su análisis para poder comparar ambas estructuras, y llegar a abstraer las características fundamentales dentro de ambas estructuras, comparativamente entre ambas, en su práctica y aplicaciones.
