En Argentina se cultivan entre 7.000 y 9.900 hectáreas con zanahoria abasteciendo el mercado interno y con un excedente que se exporta. Mendoza es la principal provincia productora. El objetivo del trabajo fue evaluar la variabilidad en caracteres que determinan rendimiento y calidad en cultivares de zanahoria utilizadas en Mendoza. Durante tres años fueron implantadas, en la EEA La Consulta INTA, ocho cultivares bienales de polinización abierta tipo Flakkee: Beatriz, Colmar, Flakkese, Laval, Natasha, Spring, Supreme y Tim Tom. Las siembras fueron el 17/8/06, 6/9/07 y 12/9/08, utilizándose diseño en bloque completamente aleatorizado, y las cosechas el 31/1/07, 7/2/08 y 24/2/09. Se evaluaron porcentajes de defectos, tamaño, color y contenidos de sólidos solubles en raíces. Los porcentajes de raíces atacadas por insectos y raíces podridas estuvieron exclusivamente influenciados por el ambiente. En el porcentaje de raíces con hombros verdes las cultivares se diferenciaron en el año de mayor incidencia, destacándose Colmar y Beatriz por los menores valores. En el porcentaje de raíces rajadas las más bajas fueron Colmar y Natasha, y en el porcentaje de floración prematura Flakkese, Natasha, Laval, Tim Tom y Colmar. En largo de raíz y contenido de sólidos las cultivares tuvieron mayor consistencia, destacándose Colmar y Flakkesse por sus raíces largas y Beatriz por el mayor contenido de sólidos. Además, Beatriz tuvo el mayor diámetro, y Colmar y Flakkesse el mejor color.
